The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
