Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.

The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This new chapter signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Returning to a character you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.

An Unexpected Return for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.

"I remember the conversation. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."

The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.

"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Excitement Run High

While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way still living in a bizarre shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, reminiscent of classic horror movies, also exists.

Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
