The Obstacles Mounting

They are blighted by poor fortune: the Trump presidency landed on their watch. What more unfortunate incident than a jail staff member releasing a denied migrant sex offender? Migrant crossings feel relentless.

An ill-advised deputy leadership election right now was certain to give the Labour leader a setback. The 11% vote share at the Welsh parliament special election might not even be their worst performance.

They prepare for criticism, but they have feelings. As often, Wes Streeting dares say the obvious truth: that we're experiencing "deep disillusionment in this country at the moment" and "a growing sense of despair about whether anyone is capable of turning this country round".

Voter Perception Baffles

Yet, even so, the current vitriolic state of voter perception is puzzling and worrying. The Labour leader is the most unpopular prime minister in history. Truly?

He represents a honorable, committed person of good intentions, lacking excessive pride or vanity. Measure this against Boris Johnson, the short-lived PM, or the breezy presumption of the former Conservative leader, each achieving minimal to warrant arrogant assurance.

Leadership Challenges

However, voters claim, the current PM is poorer. In his leadership role, he's short on leadership appeal, observers note: more importantly, he doesn't possess political agility, ingenuity or instinct for where the wind blows.

The government mishandled regarding reductions to elderly citizens and those with disabilities, contrasted with generosity elsewhere. Unsure which demographic to target, ministers have permitted good policies uncelebrated, from working rights to environmental funding, housing projects and training opportunities for the next generation.

Political Strategy

Too many close advisers continue to believe right-wing constituencies demands attention, when significantly more electors have leaned liberal since the election was won. Polling guru the polling authority advises the party to cease pursuing populist constituency: they're lost.

Labour's leader is underperforming; there's no denying it when surveys indicate no leader could bounce back from such unprecedented lows.

Yet, during unknown circumstances of remarkable instability, history may be no guide. Starmer pulled Labour from the period following Corbyn condition of hopelessness that political analysts claimed couldn't be reversed in one term.

Potential Scenarios

Would anyone else achieve superior results, or has society entered a virtually unmanageable, insatiable public state of mind? All ruling parties may be opposed with similar speed once in power, however great its landslide victory, unless it arrives with immediate solutions offering substantial benefits for stricken public services and financially strained households.

Unsurprisingly, anxiety among MPs will make discussion about replacing the leader commonplace if the spring local elections go according to negative projections – or, certain observers propose, sooner.

The Way Forward

Here's ministers' paradox: The party's sole opportunity lies in despair. Prepare for being overwhelmed anyway, so use this massive majority for the remainder of the term to follow their natural social democratic instinct: make radical tax reforms, raising plenty.

Expect to lose subsequent votes, so implement all policies immediately. Forget opinion polls and voter research; let voters see sincerity in their purpose. The sole method to rebuild credibility is to do transparently what they believe most correct and reasonable.

Labour's duty is to do whatever it takes to block this outcome. Prepare for coalition, stay suitable for progressive partners when political labels matters less than the essential limit against an electoral threat unprecedented in modern history.

This represents a mission to defeat discouragement.
