A Danish citizen has been convicted of sharing nude segments from protected films and TV series on the online site Reddit.

According to a police document reviewed by media outlets, the anonymous individual posted 347 video excerpts of explicit content in a Reddit group he managed, which were then viewed 4.2 million-plus times.

The country's police state he has been given a 7-month suspended sentence for violating copyright laws.

Legal analysts explain the defendant was prosecuted under a rarely-used clause in Denmark's intellectual property legislation, with the court ruling that by taking the scenes out of their original context, the accused had damaged the performers' "moral rights".

He has also been convicted of distributing more than 25 TB of copyrighted digital content.

From March 2022 to May 2023, the man using the alias "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded sexually explicit scenes featuring over 100 female performers.

He shared them in the subreddit he was a administrator of.

According to the Danish copyright protection organization the Rights Alliance, his subreddit had more than 6,000 subscribers and participants were prompted to ask for clips of particular actors.

In last year, campaigners filed the case to the police on behalf of the impacted actors, directors and production companies, which led to the subreddit being closed down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, among the performers whose nude scenes were circulated in the community, told Danish broadcasters at the time she believed there was a difference between appearing naked in a film and being shown on Reddit.

The actress said the uploads constituted "exploitation".

'An important message'

The defendant was detained in fall 2024 and admitted culpable to the allegations recently.

In a comment following the ruling, TRA head the organization's leader remarked the outcome sent an "important" signal "indicating infringements of artists' entitlements has consequences".

The ruling is viewed as unique in the country for its application of the "ethical protections" section of the Danish Copyright Act, which states an artist's work cannot be used in a manner which infringes upon their reputation.

Intellectual property specialist Dr Alina Trapova told BBC News the case was "unusual" for its emphasis on the harm to the integrity of an artist, rather than to them financially.

The extent to which the case could affect nations abroad is uncertain.

But she added there may be "more and more of such cases" in the future with the advancement of artificial intelligence, where "the sanctity of one's work might be compromised with greater ease".
