At least four protesters have been fatally wounded during clashes between police and military and demonstrators since Cameroon's election on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state obtaining an eighth term in office. Issa Tchiroma insists that he won the election, a statement rejected by the governing party, the ruling CPDM. Aggressive responses by law enforcement on protesters have worried the world leaders, with the UN, AU and European Union urging moderation. Official's Claims Earlier this week, Nji charged the opposition figure of planning what he labeled "illegal" demonstrations resulting in the loss of lives, and also condemned him for declaring victory in the electoral contest. He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates behind an rebellious scheme" will also undergo judicial processes. Election Results The president, who came to power in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October election with over half of the vote, compared to just over a third for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the constitutional court. Challenger's Position Issa Tchiroma is remains silent to the authorities' move to try him, but he had earlier declared that he would not accept a rigged election - and that he was fearless of being detained. Following the vote count, he claimed that security forces shot on demonstrators assembled near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least two people. Probe Announced Earlier this week, the interior minister revealed that an inquiry would be initiated into clashes surrounding the announcement of the election results. "Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he stated, without providing a specific number of protesters who have been killed in the incidents. Nji noted that a number of personnel of the security forces also suffered major harm. Present Conditions Although the interior minister asserted the situation across the country was now manageable, demonstrators remain active in certain regions of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where protesters set up barricades on that day, and ignited tyres on the streets. Experts alert that the post-electoral violence could plunge the nation into a governmental instability.
